Imagine. Sketch. Build. Move. Discover.
Are you ready to become an author?
There are many ways to write stories, and these holidays we plan to explore as many of them as we can squeeze in!
Monday 14 January - Imagine!
Where do ideas come from? What inspires you? What do you have to say? Today is all about drawing on what you know to write exactly what you don't know... yet. Jess Mackay's experience as a writer and editor, and her love of literature, has helped many young writers find their voice and uncover beautifully descriptive writing from a variety of starting points.
Get ready to discover what's possible, and how to translate that into stories readers want to read!
Focus: Story setting, Character Journeys
Tuesday 15 January - Sketch! SOLD OUT!
Have you ever been able to see what you mean before you find the words to explain it? Ben Pearmain is not only one of our longest-running Workshop Leaders and Studio Manager, he is also the human behind many of our book covers and has inspired hundreds of young writers through the visual cues he has learnt from his years as a professional illustrator. Learn how to bring your characters to life in visual form, to help you bring them to life on the written page.
Focus: Character development, Illustration
Wednesday 16 January - Build!
When we talk about writing stories, we use a lot of words like 'build' 'structure' 'pieces' and 'fit together' - and for good reason! What are the elements you need to write engaging stories? Marie Kelly brings her background as a scriptwriter, poet, and short story writer to explore these 'building blocks' in the most literal way: by building a unique story tower. Get ready to look at stories in a way you never have before! Sometimes a little time outside the box is just what you need to understand how the box works.
Focus: Story Structure, Mixed-Media Craft
Thursday 17 January - Move! SOLD OUT!
Did you know our director Amy Han is also a parkour practitioner and instructor? This day is all about using movement as a tool for exploring ideas and developing stories. Learn some basic parkour techniques, explore your own style of movement, and discover how these can help you in your journey as a writer! Finish the day with an optional performance of an original story you have written and developed throughout the day.
Focus: Story Development Techniques, Parkour
Friday 18 January - Discover!
So you've got a plot, a plan and a dream to bring it to life. Now what? Now is the perfect time to discover what this story can become, that's what! Under the expert guidance of fiction writer, poet, and editor Tamara Drazic, you'll have the option of publishing a handmade book, developing a short script, or curating a suite of poems to share with family and friends, the world, or simply keep as a memento of your January 2019 creative journey.
