“I’m Bored!”: Timeless Ideas for the School Holidays

It’s a particularly challenging year for finding entertaining things to do in Melbourne, but let’s be honest - the need for boredom busting in the school holidays is nothing new.
I remember driving my parents crazy with the sentence, “I’m bored” all the time! The things I found to do turned out to be things I still love: reading, writing, and creating. School holidays are an excellent time for pursuing activities you already enjoy, as well as giving new things a go.

If you’re seeking some inspiration these school holidays, here are a few ideas that never get old:

Make Something

  • An epic blanket cubby
  • A party of monster cookies
  • The ultimate board game
  • A card for someone you care about
  • A book (or your very own Little Book of Details!)

Do Something

  • Build a backyard obstacle course
  • Plant a kitchen garden
  • Read a book
  • Perform a live reading (practice looking at your audience!)
  • Write a story YOU want to read!

Go Somewhere

  • The park (hooray for playgrounds re-opening!)
  • Into nature. What's happening on the trees in your street? What can you build from sticks in your backyard? What shapes are in the clouds? There are ideas all around you. Let your natural environment guide your day!
  • Anywhere, really! Swap rooms with your siblings, walk to the local shops for ice cream, or set up a tent in the backyard. A change of scenery - no matter how small - can turn any day into an adventure.

Learn Something

All of the following are available online for the September 2020 school holidays!
  • Immerse yourself in a world of books at the State Library of Victoria
  • Wet your feet (virtually!) with the turtles, jellyfish and other marine creatures at the Sea Life Holiday Camp
  • Cook up a storm at Dandenong Market’s Jungle Kitchen!
  • Get creative and write something amazing at Creative Write-it (we couldn’t leave this off the list!)
When it comes to the school holidays, there are endless possibilities for things to do when you start to follow what lights you up. I hope that there is something in this list that inspires a fun and memorable day. Who knows? You might just discover something you love in the process, too!
If you’d like to join us for creative writing workshops these school holidays, we’d love to write with you! Find the September holiday program here.
